How to Draw A Feather. A feather is a flat epidermal growth from a bird’s skin. It forms a distinctive outer coat or plumage consisting of a thin hollow shaft surrounded by soft, hairy tips.

Drawing a feather is important, especially if you plan to draw a bird. For a bird to look realistic, you need to be able to draw elaborate feathers.

Luckily you’ve come to the right place. We’ve created a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a feather, summarized in 9 quick and easy steps.

Plus, each guide has an illustration to make the process easier to follow! Have fun drawing a realistic-looking feather!

How to Draw A Feather

Step 1

Draw a thin line with a sharp pointed tip. This forms the hollow shaft to which all the springs are attached.

Make sure the line is slightly curved. Also, the bottom of the shaft should be relatively thicker than the top, which should be pointed.

Step 2

Draw an inverted U-shaped line just above the pointed tip of the quill.

This forms the spring at the top. With this step completed, the top part of the feather is now complete.

Step 3

Draw a curved line on the left side of the tree, starting from the left end of the inverted U-shaped line.

This creates the upper left side of the feather.

Step 4

Draw another curve down from the opposite end of the inverted U-shaped line.

This will form the top right side of the feather. At this point, the top half of the feather is complete.

Don’t worry if this feather differs from the first one we drew earlier. The feathers that we draw individually do not necessarily have to be uniform.

The more irregular they are, the more realistic the feather appears!

Step 5

In this step, we return to the fountain’s left side. Continue by making a pointed, curved shape upside down, just below the feather we drew earlier in step three.

The shape of this feather should be pointed at the top and rounded at the bottom, as shown in the image above.

Step 6

Repeat the previous step on the opposite side. This creates another single spring on the lower right side of the shaft.

At this point, the spring structure is almost complete. Just one more layer of the feather, and this will be complete! Keep going; you’re almost there!

Step 7

Draw more connected pointed shapes at the bottom left. The top end of this figure should be connected to the spring above, while the bottom end should be attached to the shaft. This completes the feathers on the left side of the stock.

Step 8

Move to the right side of the stem and repeat the previous step until the spring is fully formed. Again, don’t worry about the feathers remaining identical.

As you can see in the figure, the feather gradually merges. Only a few details still need to be included to finish the feather!

Step 9

Draw more diagonal lines coming out of the fountain. Be sure to add lines on the feathers on the left and right sides. This adds texture to the feather and makes it look soft and lifelike!

Remember that these lines should be drawn with light strokes. Keep the pencil high enough to avoid harsh and unrealistic details.

That’s it – you’ve successfully drawn a realistic-looking feather! Now it’s finally time for the most exciting part: choosing the colours and dyeing the feather.

Feathers come in various colours, largely dependent on the type of feather. The colours in non-iridescent feathers come from the natural pigments on the feathers themselves, while the colours in iridescent feathers come from the refraction of light.

Feel free to colour the feather with any colour you like! You can even use more than one colour to create a unique multicoloured feather! Have fun playing with colours and see the feather finally come to life
